The Gathering Place among 23 recipients of Nalcor Energy’s Coming Together for Our Communities Holiday Donation Initiative

December 11th, 2017

ST. JOHN’S, December 11, 2017 – Today, the Gathering Place and Nalcor Energy announced that they are one of 23 community groups across the province that are receiving items as part of Nalcor’s Coming Together for our Communities Holiday Donation Initiative. This initiative will see items being donated from the Bull Arm Fabrication Site to community groups across Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Over a thousand people in St. John’s live on the streets or in hostel boarding houses and we are expecting these numbers to increase. Nalcor Energy’s generous donation of large appliances and other kitchen items will help us meet this growing need, allowing us to serve more hot meals and continue to provide a safe and warm place for our patrons.”

Joanne Thompson, Executive Director, The Gathering Place

“For 20 years the Gathering Place has provided its guests with programs and services that help foster independence, self-respect and dignity. The donation being provided by Nalcor Energy to the Gathering Place and the 22 other community groups across the province will help these organizations continue the very important work they do for some of our province’s most vulnerable people.”

The Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources

“Giving back to the communities in which we operate and our employees live is important to Nalcor. We saw an opportunity for the items at the Bull Arm Site to have a substantial impact to community groups across the province. With the donation of kitchen equipment and household items, 23 organizations will be able to expand and continue to serve hot meals and to furnish housing and give families a safe and deserving place to call home.”

Jim Keating, Executive Vice President, Offshore Development and Corporate Services, Nalcor Energy

The Gathering Place through Nalcor Energy – Bull Arm Fabrication’s donation is receiving several large scale appliances including a warming station, a cooking centre, six washers and six dryers as well as serval dining room tables and chairs. Through the donation of these items, The Gathering Place will be able to better serve the patrons of its organization and expand its breakfast program to six days a week in 2018.

The Gathering Place is a street level community centre dedicated to meeting the health, social and supportive living needs of over 1,500 marginalized adults. There are 760 volunteers, alongside 10 staff to deliver critical services and programs, including two hot meals a day, laundry, showers, computer access, literacy, therapeutic arts and primary health care clinic.
