Public Safety Advisory: Controlled Water Release at Churchill Falls Jacopie Spillway

August 21st, 2019

Nalcor Energy Churchill Falls advises the public of a controlled water release to occur from the upper Churchill reservoir at the Jacopie Spillway commencing Friday, August 23, 2019. The duration of the water release is unknown.

The public is advised to avoid the following and surrounding areas:

  • Jacopie Spillway upstream and downstream of the Spillway.
  • Whitefish Control Structure.
  • The Churchill River Walking Trail.
  • East and west forebay water storage areas located north of the community of Churchill Falls.

Water levels along the upper and lower Churchill River are expected to be consistent with levels typically seen this time of year. The planned release has been reviewed with Muskrat Falls river operations and they have incorporated it in the impoundment plans.

The controlled water release is due to accumulative amounts of precipitation over this past year. The release ensures we continue maintaining safe water levels in the reservoir.

Safety is always our number one priority. The public is advised to avoid areas around our generation facilities as water levels in these areas are unpredictable and will fluctuate. We will notify the public once the controlled release of water has ended.
