Churchill Falls Fire Department Donates Fire Truck to Port Hope Simpson, Labrador

April 12th, 2019

The Nalcor Energy Churchill Falls Fire & Security Department is donating a fire truck to the community of Port Hope Simpson. The donation is being presented this morning to the Port Hope Simpson Volunteer Fire Department by Darrin Mills, Churchill Falls Fire Chief, and Jean Healey, Churchill Falls Fire & Security Officer.

“We are always very pleased to be a part of helping communities in need, especially through donations such as this,” says Mills. “This is a vital piece of equipment that will potentially save lives and property while offering the community of Port Hope Simpson, as well as its first responders, added peace of mind in fire emergency situations.”

Mills and Healey delivered a full day of pump operator training on Thursday, April 11 to the volunteer fire fighters. Instruction was mostly comprised of practical training with a focus on the safe operation of the equipment.

Nalcor Energy consulted with local MHA’s for recommendations for this donation. Being one of the larger coastal communities without such equipment, Port Hope Simpson was identified as the best suited recipient. The Honourable Lisa Dempster, Minister of Children, Seniors and Social Development will be in attendance this morning to participate in the official donation festivities.

“Fire and emergency services are arguably the most important infrastructure investment in a community. As MHA, I am very pleased to have facilitated this donation to a community in my district that reached out and identified this need,” says Minister Dempster.

The donation follows the purchase of a new fire truck for Churchill Falls. The upgrade was necessary to better position the department to respond to emergencies in its underground hydroelectric facility, switchyards, community, and along the Trans-Labrador Highway. The donated truck has been a part of the emergency response fleet since 1992.

In 2012, the department donated a Jaws of Life device to Mary’s Harbour, Labrador.
