What’s it like to work with Nalcor Energy and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro?

Nalcor Energy is committed to a diverse and inclusive work environment, that recognizes and supports the wellness of its employees.

Not just work/life balance, but work/happiness
First launched in 2010, Nalcor’s Wellness Program is committed to providing both permanent and temporary employees the opportunity to integrate wellness into their day-to-day lives. The idea is to make small changes in lifestyle, with a focus on physical fitness, exercise and community and family involvement. Healthy people are happy people, and Nalcor is committed to its employees’ overall well-being, and not just from nine to five.

One of our wellness themes is heart health. An online survey — the @liveWellness Navigator Quiz — of Nalcor employees showed that there was a problem with overall physical health, with troubling numbers for blood pressure, blood sugar, body weight, waist circumference, cholesterol, and resting heart rate – all of which could lead to cardiovascular trouble.

The heart health theme is based on getting our employees to understand these figures, something we’re calling “Know your numbers.” Awareness is a crucial aspect of health, and by knowing what the short and long-term health risks of having “bad” numbers are, people are able to take charge of their individual health rather than feel overwhelmed by it. The program offers a little healthy competition as well: each region is encouraged to get their employees to check their numbers, with prizes going to the areas with best participation.

Building on that momentum, new challenges based on ideas such as getting active and improving fitness will be issued. The different wellness councils in each region have been given the opportunity create their own fitness program. Each region is, of course, different, and each program must speak to not only its employees’ needs but the opportunities for exercise in each area. Not every town has state-of-the-art gym or Pilates classes, so this is another chance for people to get hands-on and take control of their health future.

The program recognizes that each area’s approach to wellness will be unique. That’s why it allocates funds based on specific regional ideas. If a region has an idea it thinks will be a benefit to its employees, there’s money allocated for that to cover it.

The real success of an idea like this is, however, the employees’ willingness to get involved. The overall response so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with well over half of the company’s employees participating. To help foster that kind of commitment, employees get reimbursed up to $150 for buying supplies or equipment to participate in their wellness, with the opportunity to get another hundred dollars more.

It’s been said that little changes can make a big difference, and not just in health. At Nalcor, we know the big difference to our success is our employees and their commitment. The Wellness Program is one way we are happy to commit to you.

Employee Recognition at Nalcor Energy
Nalcor’s employee recognition program is our way of rewarding the excellence our employees bring to their work. Of course, recognition can be informal and quick, such as a simple ‘thank you’, or it can be a bit more structured, such as awards or special events. Here, we’re happy to do both.

Being recognized for achievements and knowing that your contributions matter are a huge part of anyone’s job satisfaction, and this program is designed to acknowledge our employees’ strong commitment to the organization and its values.
