The Churchill Falls Generating Station is one of the largest underground powerhouses in the world. The plant has 11 turbines with a rated capacity of 5,428 megawatts.
In 2008, more than 34 terawatt hours of electricity was produced, with the majority of that energy sold to Hydro-Québec through a long-term power purchase contract set to expire in 2041. Most of the remaining production is used for mining operations in Labrador West and Hydro's Labrador Interconnected System.
On March 31, 2009, the company's five-year power sale agreement to sell energy to Hydro-Québec expired. On April 1, 2009, Nalcor Energy, through its subsidiary, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, signed a Transmission Service Agreement with Hydro-Québec under its Open Access Transmission Tariff for power transmission from the Labrador to the Canada-U.S. border. Hydro is then selling power on the Canadian side of the border to Emera Energy Inc. Emera Energy began selling that power to the energy markets in Canada and the United States on April 1, 2009.
